HEART CHAMBER ORCHESTRA a project by TERMINALBEACH initiated and produced by TEKS - Trondheim Electronic Arts Centre in cooperation with TRONDHEIM SINFONIETTA supported by: Norsk Kulturrad // Trondheim Kommune // Sor Trondelag Fylkeskommune Fond for lyd og bilde // PNEK // Atelier Nord TERMINALBEACH TERMINALBEACH is a collaboration between PURE (Vienna/Berlin) and BERGER (Helsinki) that began in 2002. TERMINALBEACH is involved in the building of audiovisual entities. Linked performance environments intertwine abstract sonic narrations with a strong visual language of morphing surfaces to create a synaesthetic experience. PURE is an artist born in Austria. He lives and works in Berlin/Germany. Since the second half of the 90's PURE has been working mostly in the field of abstract listening music and sound for performances. His background is in DJing and producing various styles of electronic music - since 1991, with more than 20 releases on labels such as MEGO, STAALPLAAT, or his own label DOC. He also works with orchestras, solo musicians, composers and dancers. In 2005 he co-organised WASTED (2 nights of breakcore) in Berlin. http://pure.test.at BERGER is an artist and independent researcher born in Austria. He lives and works in Porvoo, Finland. BERGER's background is in communication engineering and philosophy. He works with installations and performances; in the latter, BERGER deals with sound and images in a very similar manner. Unusual modes of transformation create tight and intense compositions of sound, noise and light. Since 2003 he has been directing a series of workshops and lectures about interface and interaction design at Atelier Nord in Oslo. http://randomseed.org TRONDHEIM SINFONIETTA The Trondheim Sinfonietta was founded in 1998. The musicians come from the local professional music environment. The main goal of the ensemble is to perform contemporary music and music from the 20th century. Most of the important composers of the past 100 years have composed for the instrumentation of a Sinfonietta. Its repertoire includes music by Nordheim, Ligeti, Xenakis, Varese, Berio, Schönberg, Jon Oivind Ness and Maja Ratkje. The ensemble works in an interdisciplinary way according to artistic expressions and genres and collaborates with visual artists, electronic musiciansand writers. TEKS - http://teks.no TEKS, Trondheim Electronic Arts Centre is a non-profit organization founded in Trondheim in 2002 for promoting electronic arts of any field, locally and nationally. TEKS is a resource and competence centre for artists working with digital and electronic tools. TEKS initiates and organizes artistic productions and projects, works with promotion and education through courses and workshops, and acts as organizer or co-organizer of various cultural initiatives in the Trondheim region. The organization serves as an IT consultant for cultural institutions and administers mailing lists and web sites for cultural projects. Due to Trondheim's position as a national technology center, one priority of TEKS is to coordinate local resources and competence by establishing an interinstitutional network. Artistic projects are developed and realized by prioritizing interdisciplinary collaborations with relevant educational and research based institutions. TEKS organizes "Trondheim Matchmaking", an annual international festival of new technology and electronic arts. This festival is an arena for presentations of innovative ideas and artistic projects - a place where competence and resources are maintained and developed. The idea of the project "Heart Chamber Orchestra" was initiated in 2003 by Espen Gangvik, TEKS. The idea originally suggested that the electronic duo PURE.BERGER, now TERMINALBEACH should make a cooperational project with an "analog" orchestra, a project where the electronic duo would have use of the orchestra as part of a digitally-based piece of music and performance. This was the very birth of the HCO project, and from this the project has developed further. |
